Apple is reportedly lining up a significant redesign of the MacBook Pro, the first in several years, with the new model expected to arrive later this year.

According to multiple reports, the headline feature will be touchscreen support. Apple has avoided touchscreens on laptops for more than a decade, but is now said to be confident it can introduce the feature without undermining the user experience.

Another major upgrade is expected to be an OLED display, replacing the current LCD panels. A supply-chain report suggests Samsung is preparing OLED production for a device launching in the fall.

Apple is aiming to move most of its premium devices to OLED over the next two years. Alongside the MacBook Pro, OLED is expected to come to the iPad Mini this year, with the MacBook Air following in 2027 or 2028.

Apple may also be looking to bring the Dynamic Island to the MacBook Pro. This would reduce the size of the camera notch and repurpose the space for notifications and system alerts. Separately, Apple’s investment in in-house cellular chips could enable cellular connectivity on future MacBook Pro models.

On performance, the refreshed MacBook Pro could be among the first Apple devices to use the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. These are expected to be the first Apple processors manufactured on a 2nm process, delivering higher clock speeds and improved efficiency, potentially resulting in quieter cooling and longer battery life.

A cheaper MacBook launch

Before the redesigned MacBook Pro arrives, Apple is reportedly planning to launch a lower-cost MacBook aimed at more budget-conscious buyers. This would mark a notable shift for Apple, which has historically made few attempts to compete at the lower end of the laptop market.

Reports suggest the device could start at $599, featuring a lower-resolution 12.9-inch display, an older A18 Pro processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

Mac sales have remained steady at around 20 to 25 million units annually since the pandemic, although revenue has declined over the past three years. A cheaper MacBook may be Apple’s attempt to reignite growth in the category.

An iPhone redesign on the horizon

If the reports are accurate, the MacBook Pro is not the only product in line for a major redesign. Apple is also said to be planning a significant iPhone update next year to mark the device’s 20th anniversary.

For its 10th anniversary, Apple introduced the iPhone X, which brought the all-screen design, camera notch, and Face ID. A redesign of similar scope is reportedly in development, potentially featuring an all-glass, uninterrupted display with the front camera placed behind the screen. The device could also remove physical buttons, which may allow Apple to further reduce its thickness.
