If you have a model with the adaptive suspension, you have a choice of Sport, Comfort or CUPRA mode to select. If you’re looking for on-road thrills, then selecting Sport mode in any of these e-HYBRID models will give you the fix you’re looking for. CUPRA mode makes the suspension a bit stiffer, so you can press on with enthusiasm on an energised drive. When you need to pop it into Comfort mode, then the compliant ride will smooth out all but the very roughest roads – even on the larger optional wheels. Individual mode allows you to amend the…
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has published its vision for open finance, focusing on helping small businesses and consumers to access better products through the secure sharing of their data with finance firms. Regulators need to act if the UK is to retain advantages in the sector. At an event earlier this year, Ron Kalifa, former CEO of fintech giant Worldpay, who carried out the HM Treasury-commissioned review of the fintech sector, warned against complacency. During his speech at the Innovate Finance event in February, Kalifa said the UK is losing its leadership in open banking, having “laid the…
The boss of Europe’s largest quantum computing firm says it is determined to make the engineering breakthroughs that superconducting quantum computers need to become capable of running the world-changing applications expected of them. This is despite US Advanced Defense Research Agency’s (Darpa’s) warning that the current architecture will fail to fulfil its promise. Jan Goetz, CEO of Finnish quantum scale-up IQM, says in an interview with Computer Weekly that Darpa might be right to say the dominant quantum computing architecture cannot scale using current technology. However, he adds, engineering breakthroughs can and will happen to prove that the US…
Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has partnered with OpenAI to support drug research and development. Through the partnership, Novo Nordisk said it plans to deploy advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to analyse complex datasets, identify promising drug candidates and reduce the time required to move from research to patient. The company said its use of AI has been structured with strict data protection, governance and human oversight to ensure ethical and compliant use. This latest partnership is being positioned as a key part of the company’s strategy to use AI to transform healthcare and enable it to bring new…
Major UK banks are in discussions with regulators as well as finance and national security organisations as the latest Anthropic artificial intelligence (AI) model unearths decades-old vulnerabilities. At the same time Anthropic has announced Project Glasswing, which is providing a select group of organisations access to the model, known as Claude Mythos Preview AI, to enable them to develop defences against its misuse. The AI model’s ability to identify security flaws in software which have remained undetected for years, despite organisations such as banks constantly looking for them, is a warning of what AI in the wrong hands could…
Nissan has revealed the new X-Trail SUV as part of a wide-reaching overview of the company’s future strategy, design language and model line-up. Revealed alongside the new electric Nissan Juke in an event at the company’s Yokohama headquarters in Japan, the new X-Trail E-Power is due next year as a rival to the Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento and Peugeot 5008. Nissan has shown only the exterior of the car so far and offered no technical details, but the E-Power badging confirms it will feature a version of the company’s full-hybrid powertrain. This system differs from conventional parallel hybrid technology in that the…
When he was a fresh-faced doctoral candidate, one of my university professors was involved in the early stages of civilian GPS application. His work centred on how to utilise this remarkable tech outside the secretive military domain. I remember him telling us about when, one morning in the 1990s, he had woken up to carry out his usual checks and discovered they were all over the place. Overnight the Americans had shifted the constellation (at this time not yet at its full strength of 24 satellites sitting 13,800 miles above us) to focus on the Persian Gulf. Normally the orbital…

The people running UK public services are busy working out how artificial intelligence (AI) might improve things. There’s some good stuff happening, like tools to digitise planning information, transcribe probation officers’ conversations or rapidly assess stroke victims. There’s some nicely radical thinking coming out of various pockets of the Government Digital Service and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Teams across government are running countless experiments. But what if governments are looking through the AI telescope from the wrong end? What if citizens’ own use of AI to access public services proves to be an even more transformative…
The fit and finish inside the RAV4 is exactly as robust as you would expect from Toyota, although a few cheap and nasty plastics lurk lower down in the cabin. It’s a utilitarian space: if the exterior echoes the Land Cruiser, the interior certainly takes inspiration from it too. The new, free-standing touchscreen features fresh and responsive infotainment software, offering modern conveniences like a digital phone key. This brings the car up to date, although it hardly puts it ahead of the curve. Physical switchgear is abundant. Below the screen sits a volume dial alongside buttons for the climate control. Beneath those…
