Four months late, Gemini in Chrome finally arrives on Chromebooks.

Gemini in Chrome combines Google’s advanced AI with Chrome’s context, enabling users to summarize content, generate images, and perform advanced agentic functions. Google sees the update as one of its most concerted efforts to solidify Chrome as the default browser against fierce competition.

According to a report cited by 9to5Google, Google has begun the batched rollout to Chromebook users months after Mac and Windows received theirs. Despite running Google’s ChromeOS, these users are the last to receive major updates.

A little backstory

Chrome leads the market today, but Google is still under pressure to defend that position as the browser landscape shifts. New AI-focused browsers like Comet are raising the stakes for what users expect from a browser.

Google responded to the competition with Gemini in Chrome. Launched in September 2025, it first rolled out for Android, Mac, and Windows users. Combining Chrome’s superiority and Gemini’s advanced intelligence, Google offered Chrome users a different kind of AI browser.

The development is not new to anyone who uses Google services, especially Android users. Gemini has been everywhere lately. A fraction of it is embedded in every Google product to enhance productivity while locking users into the Gemini ecosystem.

Gradual availability for Chromebook users

According to the 9to5Google report, the feature is rolling out to Chrome users running Chrome 144, the most updated stable version as of Jan. 13. While Google has yet to issue an official press statement, a line from the Chrome 144 release notes reads:

“Chrome 144 on ChromeOS: As early as 144 Gemini in Chrome will be rolling out gradually to selective ChromeOS devices.”

The gradual rollout appears to start with Chromebook Plus users, 9to5Google further reports.

In their own words, Google Gemini, under their FAQ section, writes:

“Gemini in Chrome is rolling out to all eligible Mac and Windows users in the US who have their Chrome language set to English. We look forward to bringing this feature to more people and additional languages soon. Gemini in Chrome on iOS is coming soon to eligible iPhone users in the US who have their Chrome language set to English.”

Features of Gemini in Chrome

The Gemini in Chrome is one of Google’s most important Gemini abilities. It aims to enhance all of Chrome’s features and ultimately boost productivity and security for Chrome users.

Drawing from Chrome’s context and permission, alongside Gemini’s intelligence, it can serve the following purposes:

  • Summarize the contents of webpages. You can think of this as a TL;DR built right inside your browser
  • Contextualize tabs by drawing from up to ten open tabs and answering questions based on what’s in there
  • Integrates with Google apps and services to generate images, schedule events, and read emails
  • Uses smart intelligence to detect and block malware while browsing
  • Voice interaction and enhanced AI-powered search
  • Future agentic abilities

Users with the feature rolled out on their machines can access it from the Chrome toolbar. Google also says that you can set a keyboard shortcut on your Mac or Windows to access it easily.

On mobile, Android users can access it by pressing the power button, which also activates Gemini Assistant for most Android devices. iOS users will likely be the last to receive the feature via the Chrome omnibox.
