Apple is finally gearing up to deliver some much-needed screen upgrades for professional Mac users.

New leaked code reveals a major overhaul is coming for the second-generation Studio Display, bringing it closer to the high-end experience of a MacBook Pro.

The first Studio Display launched in 2022, offering 5K resolution, 600 nits of brightness, and a built-in camera and speakers. But the lack of HDR and 120Hz support has remained a persistent criticism, especially given its premium price point. The new leaks, identified internally by the codename “J527,” suggest Apple intends to address those gaps substantially.

Internal Apple code for a pre-release version of iOS 26, seen by Macworld, suggests that the new Studio Display will include a variable refresh rate capable of hitting 120Hz. This feature, which Apple calls ProMotion on its laptops and tablets, would be a big jump from the current model’s fixed 60Hz rate.

The code also indicates the monitor will support both SDR and HDR modes, moving past the current Studio Display’s SDR-only limit. As Macworld contributor Filipe Esposito notes, this is a “strong indication that Apple will replace the LCD panel with better technology, such as Mini-LED that can achieve higher brightness levels.”

For context, the existing Studio Display maxes out at 600 nits of brightness. If Apple transitions to a panel technology similar to the latest MacBook Pros, users could see up to 1,000 nits of sustained brightness and peak highlights of 1,600 nits when viewing HDR content. This would represent a significant leap in contrast and brightness.

A new chip under the hood: A19 replaces A13

Beyond display upgrades, Macworld reports that the new model will use Apple’s A19 chip. The first-generation Studio Display uses the A13, which handles image processing for the webcam and Spatial Audio. According to Macworld, “the new Studio Display will reportedly be powered by the A19 chip.”

The more powerful chip could allow for better computational photography and more headroom for future capabilities such as improved voice control for Siri.

Possible release timeline

While the codename “J527” has been previously associated with a new Studio Display by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the exact timing remains unconfirmed. However, the features in the internal code point toward a possible launch sometime in 2026.

The new display could be released alongside a new generation of Mac Studio computers, expected to feature the next-generation M5 chips. Separately, there has been speculation that Apple is developing another high-end monitor under the codename “J427,” though it’s unclear whether this is a different display altogether or another size option for the Studio Display lineup.
