MacRumors reported on a claim from a China-based source that Apple has advanced a variable-aperture camera design into a late engineering phase, where hardware concepts are typically stress-tested for performance and production viability.
The same report said Apple is also experimenting with an optical teleconverter concept. While neither feature is confirmed, the combination suggests Apple is exploring new ways to balance exposure and zoom in future Pro-level cameras, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

The rumor traces back to the Weibo account Smart Pikachu, which claimed Apple’s variable-aperture system is no longer at an early concept stage. Instead, it has moved into engineering samples, indicating active hardware validation rather than theoretical design.
The teleconverter mention is less concrete. It was described as a component under consideration, not something locked for release. The same source suggested Apple is still deciding whether the optical approach makes sense within the physical constraints of a smartphone.
The account also reiterated expectations that Apple will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, in line with Apple’s traditional launch window.
Why Apple keeps revisiting variable aperture
A variable-aperture lens would give Apple more control over how light enters the camera, particularly during video recording. Instead of compensating solely through software, the camera could physically adjust its aperture to control brightness and depth.
In practice, that could help reduce the overly crisp, high-shutter look that often appears in bright outdoor video. By optically moderating incoming light, Apple could maintain smoother motion while keeping exposure consistent.
