Why the Ford Mondeo Excels in Everyday Driving

According to Verpraet, the Ford Mondeo impresses notably in Parry-Jones’s renowned 20-metre test, largely due to its excellent driving ergonomics and user-friendly controls—qualities that become apparent even before shifting out of first gear. He observes, “While the car’s design elements like its shape, color palette, materials, low beltline, and expansive glass surfaces give it a somewhat dated feel, it remains highly rewarding to drive smoothly through typical traffic.”

However, Prior expresses some concern about the Mondeo’s legacy. “It seems stuck in the ‘old banger’ phase and hasn’t quite transitioned into a classic status yet,” he remarks. “Even the Sierra, which came before it, hasn’t fully achieved that recognition.”

The Lamborghini Diablo SV: A 1990s Icon of Power and Style

In stark contrast to the Mondeo, the Lamborghini Diablo SV stands out as a symbol of 1990s supercar extravagance. Introduced in the mid-1990s as a more potent—and somewhat surprisingly more affordable—variant of the original 1990 Diablo, it was designed to succeed the legendary Countach.

Much like the Mondeo, the Diablo SV reflects the automotive trends of its decade. It was finalized during the period when Chrysler owned Lamborghini, a time when major automotive conglomerates were increasingly investing in niche sports car brands—examples include Toyota and General Motors’ involvement with Lotus, and Ford’s acquisition of Aston Martin.

The Diablo’s design, initially crafted by Marcello Gandini with his signature angular aesthetic, was later softened by Chrysler’s design team. This modification, while intended to broaden appeal, has arguably contributed to the car’s dated appearance today.

The specific Diablo SV featured here was our original test vehicle, embodying the spirit of its era. Its iconic scissor doors, while visually striking, complicate entry and exit. The driving position leaves something to be desired, and reversing is challenging due to extremely limited rear visibility.

Nonetheless, behind the wheel, the Diablo SV delivers an exhilarating experience. The engine’s raw power and distinctive roar, combined with the tactile, all-mechanical gated shifter, transport drivers far from the constraints of modern vehicles. Once familiar with its idiosyncrasies, the Diablo SV proves to be a remarkably engaging and capable machine.
