Jemma CrewandNick Edser,Business reportersGetty ImagesTrade tensions and a reversal in the artificial intelligence (AI) boom are among the main risks to global economic growth, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned. Its comments came in its latest world economic outlook, where it described the global economy as “steady”, with growth expected to remain “resilient” this year. The IMF’s forecast was produced ahead of Donald Trump’s threat at the weekend to impose tariffs on eight European countries opposed to his proposed takeover of Greenland. The fund also said the independence of central banks was “paramount” for global economic stability and growth. The economic watchdog said…
Getty ImagesUS President Donald Trump has threatened to impose fresh tariffs on eight allies that oppose his demands for control of Greenland.Last year, he placed taxes on goods reaching the US from countries around the world, arguing the move would boost American manufacturing and create jobs.Critics warned of higher prices and damage to the global economy. What are tariffs and how do they work?Tariffs are taxes on imported goods.Typically, the charge is a percentage of a good’s value. For example, a 10% tariff on a $10 product would mean a $1 tax on top – taking the total cost to $11 (£8.17).The…
Manchester United have an ‘ambitious aim’ to seal Champions League qualification without making a winter signing, but this is only doable on one condition. A large portion of the Man Utd contingent have got rather excited following Saturday’s 2-0 Manchester derby victory, and they should not be begrudged for that because their good days have been limited post-Sir Alex Ferguson. After 14 months of misery under former head coach Ruben Amorim, interim boss Michael Carrick contributed to United providing a tease for supporters of what may be to come in the future. As Wayne Rooney has pointed out, it only…
Someone likes Blade Runner. Image generated by Google Gemini China’s smartphone market contracted in 2025, but saw Apple topping Q4 and Huawei retaining its full-year lead. Shipments fell 1.6% year over year in the fourth quarter and 0.6% for the full year, according to preliminary data from Counterpoint Research’s Market Monitor Tracker. The figures underscore a market still struggling to regain sustained momentum after a year marked by cautious consumer spending, intense competition, and uneven policy support. Counterpoint noted that shipments contracted in every quarter of 2025 except the first, when government subsidies delivered a temporary boost. That pattern suggests…
Passengers caught up in a deadly train crash in Adamuz have described the moment a Madrid-bound train derailed and crossed over to neighbouring tracks, colliding with an oncoming train. Survivors told of people and their belongings being “scattered” around the carriage, and described an “absolutely terrifying” scene. At least 39 people were killed in the high-speed crash at 19:45 local time (18:45 GMT) on Sunday, about an hour after the train left Málaga.
BBC chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman has this analysis.
There are few bleaker things in football than the point where absolutely everyone has realised a manager is doomed, apart from the suits who actually have to make the decision. Spurs fans know Thomas Frank is done. The Spurs players definitely know Thomas Frank is done. Most clearly of all, Thomas Frank knows Thomas Frank is done. In the cruellest of twists, the only person among the 60000 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Spurs’ latest barrel-scraping nadir against West Ham who doesn’t yet realise Thomas Frank is done is Vinai Venkatesham, the new post-Levy CEO who actually has to make…
Liverpool Football Club (LFC) has deployed so-called machine learning (ML) as a service from cloud storage provider Wasabi that will index and tag every frame of video footage owned by the club. The move will cut 5,000 hours of media management time annually and allow for the provision of “hyper-personalised” content to fans and partner organisations. The service – WasabiAiR – is currently deployed by LFC on new video content that runs to many hours per game day and is being applied to decades’ worth of archive footage. WasabiAiR is an add-on to the cloud provider’s existing storage services…
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will dissolve parliament on Friday, paving the way for an early election on 8 February that she hopes will translate her strong public polling into a big majority in the lower house. It was an “extremely weighty decision” that would “determine Japan’s course together with the people”, Takaichi told a news conference in Tokyo. The country’s first female leader and her cabinet have enjoyed high public support since taking office last October. But her party lags behind in polls and the move is risky. It’s Japan’s second general election in as many years and will test appetite for…
