AI assistants are no longer just helping people clean up a sentence. They may also be sanding down the quirks, perspective, and originality that make human expression feel personal in the first place, according to a new study published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences.

That change does not stop at polishing our words. As tools like ChatGPT and Gemini influence how people phrase ideas, frame issues, and work through thoughts, the study suggests they may also be narrowing the range of voices and ways of thinking that show up in everyday life.

Where the human fingerprints begin to fade

When AI smooths out a piece of writing, it can also smooth out the clues that make it feel like it came from a specific person. AI-assisted text often starts to look more similar in complexity, tone, and structure, making it harder to spot signals tied to age, gender, personality, politics, or cultural background.

That pattern can hold even when people try to force more variety. Prompts designed to create different personas or styles do not fully restore the mix of cues that naturally appear in human writing.

Some of what gets scrubbed away can also be useful information.

The study points to language patterns used in psychology and mental health research, including early clues linked to Alzheimer’s risk, such as repetition, simpler sentence structure, and misspellings. If AI tools routinely smooth those out, some important signs could become harder to catch.

Not every perspective gets equal weight

AI chatbots do not appear to settle into some neutral middle. The center they gravitate toward is often closer to viewpoints shaped by Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic societies, while other perspectives are less visible, less detailed, or pushed further from the norm.

The gap becomes clearer when a model is asked to speak from a specific identity or community. Instead of something rooted in lived experience, the output can slide into a simplified version of that perspective, leaning on stereotypes or broad cues that flatten what should be more nuanced and specific.

Repeated cues start to take hold

With enough exposure, AI’s phrasing and point of view can start rubbing off on the person using it. People writing with opinionated models can pick up that framing in their own work and, in some cases, come away with changed views.

That takes the effect beyond writing style. The same kinds of suggestions, repeated again and again, can influence what people remember, how they express ideas, and which angles start to feel most natural. That gives the assistant a stronger hand in how ideas develop.

As clean logic takes the lead

AI assistants tend to favor answers that come out neat, consistent, and easy to follow. That can leave less room for other ways of thinking, especially the kind that is intuitive, grounded in context, or not easily reduced to a clean step-by-step path.

More output does not necessarily mean more variety. AI-generated reasoning often ends up in the same general zone, and AI-assisted brainstorming can produce more ideas while making them more alike. People also often settle for suggestions that feel good enough, giving the chatbot more say in where the thinking goes next.

Drift, repeat, reinforce

According to the research, as more people rely on AI assistants to write, brainstorm, and work through problems, the same patterns can keep circulating in everyday communication and become more prevalent as the norm.

This is not a case against all standardization. Some consistency can make communication easier. But when the same styles, assumptions, and reasoning habits keep getting reused, the range of what counts as a clear voice, a credible perspective, or a smart way of thinking can start to narrow.

That is the broader stake. AI chatbots may not just make expression more uniform now. They may also make originality, minority viewpoints, and less conventional ways of thinking harder to hold onto over time.
