Revolut is placing a big bet on how people will shop next… not through websites, but through conversations with AI.
The fintech giant has unveiled a new strategic direction for Revolut Pay, announcing plans to make its one-tap checkout work seamlessly across all agentic commerce platforms in the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA). At the heart of the move is Revolut Pay’s compatibility with Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), positioning the company early in a fast-moving mix of payments and artificial intelligence.
AP2 was developed with payments and technology companies to support consent-based, agent-led transactions without forcing users through traditional checkout pages. Revolut also said it contributed directly to the protocol by adapting payment flows for account-to-account payments.
Revolut described the work as a foundation for making its payment service a “core payment rail” for conversational and automated commerce in the UK and the EEA.
“The future of shopping isn’t a website; it’s a conversation,” said Alex Codina, general manager of Acquiring at Revolut. “We aim to move beyond the click-and-pay model to a world where your AI assistant streamlines the checkout for you.”
Agentic commerce gathers pace
Revolut’s announcement comes as agentic commerce gains momentum globally. Payment providers, card networks, and technology firms are racing to build the infrastructure that allows AI systems to initiate and manage payments securely.
Industry efforts range from new agent-focused payment protocols to large-scale pilots in markets such as China and India, where conversational and AI-assisted payments are already being tested in real-world environments. At the same time, European players are exploring how AI can support smarter checkout flows, enhanced fraud controls, and more efficient payment orchestration for merchants.
However, the rise of agent-led shopping has also raised questions around trust, user consent, and accountability, with many consumers still cautious about letting AI systems make purchases on their behalf.
Revolut acknowledged this challenge indirectly, positioning security, familiarity, and zero friction as key to wider adoption.
Revolut emphasizes that transactions will still be handled through its secure infrastructure, with instant notifications and fraud monitoring. The goal is to make a familiar, trusted payment method, like Revolut Pay, the go-to option in these new automated environments.
As agentic commerce moves from experimentation to infrastructure, Revolut’s early alignment with emerging standards could help shape how payments work in AI-driven shopping. For now, the company is positioning itself for a future where checkout happens quietly in the background of a conversation.
